ICYMI, Wholeheart Agency has officially moved to Gainesville, FL as of November 1, 2024!

After three years as a fully remote marketing agency, this is a pivotal move for us. We’re laying down roots, building a local team, and planning for a brick-and-mortar headquarters in Gainesville.

Here’s why we chose Gainesville, and the impact we’re aiming to make.

Why Gainesville, Florida?

Gainesville and I go way back. I first lived here as a University of Florida student (class of 2012—Go Gators!) but, like many classmates, I left after graduation, drawn to cities with more professional opportunities. Back then, Gainesville’s job market felt limited outside of UF, Santa Fe College, or Shands Hospital, and (albeit to a lesser degree), this is still the case today.

Fast forward to my mid-30s: I’ve rediscovered Gainesville, and realized it holds incredible opportunities—especially for entrepreneurs.

Business Opportunities in Gainesville, FL

Gainesville is ripe for entrepreneurial growth. While it still lacks a robust job market for young professionals, there is much to offer entrepreneurs who are willing to put in the work to build something great of their own.

  • Space for Growth: Downtown has plenty of commercial real estate waiting to be transformed. The city is actively fostering economic development, making it a great time for entrepreneurs to build something impactful.
  • Affordable Costs: Compared to other cities in Florida, Gainesville is a bargain for both personal and business expenses. Lower living and commercial costs make it easier to grow sustainably here.
  • A Supportive Community: Gainesville’s close-knit vibe means people want to see local businesses succeed. This creates an environment where collaboration thrives.

Culture and Community in Gainesville, FL

What really sealed the deal for me was Gainesville’s culture and community. During an extended visit in late 2024 (thanks to back-to-back hurricane power outages), I was struck by how many serendipitous connections I made—potential clients, partners, and future employees.

Here’s what makes Gainesville special:

  • Welcoming Atmosphere: People genuinely want to help and collaborate. It’s unlike the competitive vibe of larger cities.
  • A Passion for Local: Gainesville locals love supporting community businesses, events, and initiatives. This enthusiasm fuels our mission to drive positive impact.
  • Seasoned Mentors: Many established entrepreneurs here are eager to share wisdom and foster connections, helping new ideas flourish.

Cost of Living in Gainesville, FL

Gainesville’s affordability is a major advantage for both living and doing business. While prices have risen here (as they have everywhere), it remains a bargain compared to cities I’ve lived in previously (like Washington, D.C.) or cities I was considering (like Tampa, FL and Austin, TX) before settling on GNV.

My luxury downtown apartment costs significantly less than it would in those cities, and commercial real estate is far more affordable, with lower lease rates and cost per square foot.

This affordability means businesses can establish themselves and grow more quickly without the financial strain of larger cities. For Wholeheart, Gainesville offers the perfect balance—an opportunity-rich environment where we can focus on impact and growth rather than high overhead costs.

Positive Impact Opportunities in Gainesville

If you’re familiar with Wholeheart, you know that positive impact is at the core of everything we do. We’re passionate about using business as a vehicle for meaningful change—helping brands integrate positive impact into their operations and marketing in ways that drive business growth and genuinely support the community.

Gainesville makes this mission not only possible but especially rewarding:

  • A Community That Cares: The close-knit culture here means that people are naturally drawn to businesses that give back. Unlike larger cities where positive impact campaigns might feel like just another marketing strategy, Gainesville’s residents actively engage with and support businesses making a difference.
  • Amplified Success: Because the community already “gets it,” impact initiatives here tend to gain traction faster. People want to get involved, whether by supporting local fundraising efforts, attending events, or spreading the word about businesses doing good.
  • Collaborative Energy: Gainesville’s business community is filled with individuals who genuinely want to see each other succeed. Whether it’s through partnerships, mentorship, or shared resources, there’s a collective desire to uplift the community and foster meaningful connections.

For Wholeheart, this alignment with our values is a game-changer. Gainesville gives us the opportunity to collaborate with businesses that are as committed to making a difference as we are—creating a ripple effect of positive change throughout the region.

Labor Pool and Talent in Gainesville, FL

While Gainesville struggles with young people leaving after graduation, there’s an undeniable opportunity in its university talent pool. With the presence of both the University of Florida and Santa Fe College, the city is brimming with ambitious, talented, and highly skilled individuals.

Many young professionals leave Gainesville to seek opportunities in larger cities, often because they don’t see viable career paths here outside of UF, Santa Fe, or Shands Hospital. But businesses willing to tap into– and help cultivate– this local talent pool can create a powerful competitive edge:

  • Internships and Early Career Opportunities: Offering internships and entry-level roles is a win-win for local businesses. It provides students with valuable experience while introducing them to the potential of staying in Gainesville post-graduation.
  • Leadership Development: Beyond hiring young professionals, businesses can create pathways for growth, giving ambitious graduates reasons to stay and invest their skills locally.
  • Collaboration with Universities: Gainesville businesses have a unique opportunity to work closely with UF and Santa Fe, tapping into a pipeline of talent eager to innovate and contribute.

For Wholeheart, this access to skilled, creative talent is an incredible resource. We’re excited to work with students and professionals who share our passion for positive impact and business growth, helping us not only build our team but contribute to retaining more of Gainesville’s brightest minds.

The Challenges

Despite its opportunities, Gainesville faces a few key challenges that need to be addressed to unlock its full potential:

  • Limited Awareness: Gainesville’s potential isn’t widely recognized. Entrepreneurs often overlook the city unless they’re already connected to the universities or city. Greater media visibility and national recognition are needed to attract outside talent and businesses.
  • Retention Issues: Many young professionals leave after graduating, seeking job opportunities in larger cities. Expanding professional opportunities beyond UF and Shands is critical to keeping talent local and fostering long-term economic growth.

At Wholeheart, we’re eager to play a role in addressing these challenges as we continue to take root and grow in GNV.

Through professional job opportunities, impactful marketing services that help local businesses expand and gain visibility, and efforts to garner national media attention for both our clients and Gainesville itself, we aim to contribute to a stronger, more vibrant business community.

Looking Ahead to 2025: Our Plans for Growth + Impact in GNV

As we settle into Gainesville, we’re setting our sights on a transformative 2025. Here’s what’s ahead for the Wholeheart team:

  • Building a local client base: Supporting small businesses with affordable services like our GNV Content Packages, and partnering with mid-to-large businesses for social media management and retainer services.
  • Growing a local team: Tapping into and cultivating local talent– both students from local universities and more experienced professionals ready to take on leadership roles.
  • Opening a downtown headquarters: Creating a versatile space that serves as a client meeting hub and team workspace, as well as a community center offering retail products from local makers and educational workshops to drive foot traffic, diversify downtown, and support local economic growth and community development.

2025 promises to be an exciting year for Wholeheart, and we’re thrilled to deepen our integration into the Gainesville community.
